Community Volunteer Centre Project, Gia Bac

The Community Volunteer Centre is a physical centre that will have different facilities that serve different purposes to tackle the various social problems in Gia Bac, one of the poorest village in the Ho Chi Minh district of Vietnam. ETS has been developing sustainable projects in this community to improve the lives of the youths and its people.

The first section of the Community Volunteer Centre is the Community Library. Currently, there is no library in Gia Bac, even in Primary or Secondary School (There is only a primary and secondary school in this commune). With the library in CVC, ECO Vietnam Group aims to inculcate the love for reading for local students. ECO Vietnam Group, ETS local partner will work together with the schools and local community organization to utilize the Community Library.

The second section of CVC are classrooms designated for the teaching of Dance, Local Ethnic musical Instrument, Drama, and other enrichment programmes for youths. The local students in Gia Bac does not has any extracurricular educational program. The local teachers places heavily emphasis on the structured curriculum set by the government, and hence time is not set aside to teach students lifeskills. These classrooms will also allow Primary School/Secondary School serve as additional space for the schools to tap on as there is a shortage of classrooms in those schools as well. Those classes stated above also help to conserve the culture of the places and provide the platform for youth in Gia Bac to gather and learn some useful things.

The Volunteering House is the third part of the CVC. It is the place for the local volunteer from city, from corporate and foreign volunteers who want to give a hand in supporting the Gia Bac community. The Outdoor classroom and Sport area is the last part of the CVC. It creates more opportunities to engage youth in Gia Bac commune in educational activities. Other than providing the solutions for the social problems in Gia Bac commune, Community Volunteering Centre also play important part in education and raising awareness of environment.

About Gia Bac

Gia Bac commune is one of 18 commune of Di Linh district, Lam Dong province, Vietnam. The village is one of the poorest villages in Vietnam. The village only has one school that caters more than 800 students from kindergarten to Secondary School with fifty teachers. Due to the geographical nature, the villagers are only able to plant corn and coffee, which does not much provide sufficient income and is easily affected by the weather. In the village, the children are needed to work and help the family, so they are discouraged from attending school. It is also because of the remoteness of the village that the village receives very little financial or welfare aid from the government as well as from other organisations.
